Orthodontic Brushing & Flossing Procedures

It may be a bit awkward to learn to brush and floss when you first start wearing braces. We have compiled some guidelines for brushing and flossing that you may refer to at any time.

Brushing (Soft Bristle Toothbrushes ONLY)

  • Use a dry brush with a small amount of toothpaste. Place bristles where gums and teeth meet.
  • Use circular, vibrating motions around the gum lines, 10 seconds on each tooth.
  • Brush slowly, each arch separately, every tooth.
  • Brush the lower teeth up and the upper teeth down. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth too!
  • When: After every meal. (If you can't brush right away, rinse well with water.)

Flossing

CONCENTRATE ON THE DANGER ZONE!

…the space between the bands or brackets and the gums!

Carefully pull un-waxed floss between wire and braces. A floss threader may be helpful. You will receive a free threader from our office at the beginning of your treatment.

  • Floss carefully around the braces.
  • Floss carefully around the gum area.
  • Floss carefully around each tooth.
  • When: Nightly after brushing.
  • How: Use floss threader between gums and braces.
  • Why: Removes plaque toothbrush misses.

REMEMBER, It's YOUR job to keep your teeth and braces spotlessly clean!
